Actor Paul Reubens, made famous for his Pee-wee Herman character, has died aged 70.
Mr Reubens died on Sunday night after a six-year battle with cancer, a condition he kept from the public eye.
“Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years,” the actor said in a statement released by his publicist on Monday.
“I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”
After many years in the spotlight as the popular grey-suited character, Pee-wee Herman, his acting career was derailed when he was arrested for indecent exposure in an adult movie theatre in Florida.Â
In 2001, he was also charged with possession of child pornography. The charge was later reduced to an obscenity charge and he was given three years’ probation.
