Omicron case confirmed in Canberra

ACT Health has confirmed a new case of the COVID-19 Omicron strain in Canberra.

The health authority says the infected person is fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and had not travelled overseas recently.

The person returned a positive COVID test result on Wednesday, before testing positive today.

ACT Health says it’s not yet known whether the infection was acquired in the ACT or NSW.

Four exposure sites have been identified: Next Gen Canberra, Indoor Pool area at Lyneham – Monday, November 29, 5.15pm – 6.45pm; The Knox Made in Watson – Tuesday, November 30, 9am – 10am; Supabarn at Kingston – Tuesday, November 30, 4.20pm – 4.50pm; Blue Gum Community School at Hackett – Tuesday, November 30, 4.30pm – 6.30pm.

ACT Health said all close contacts of the infected person would be contacted.

Meanwhile, NSW Health is investigating an outbreak of COVID-19 cases at Regents Park Christian School in western Sydney. There is now a total of 13 COVID-19 cases linked to this cluster.

“As already announced, one case has been confirmed as being the Omicron COVID-19 variant of concern. Genomic sequencing has confirmed two more cases are also the Omicron variant. Urgent genome testing is underway on a further 10 cases,” NSW Health said today.

“NSW Health is urgently investigating the source of infection for this cluster.

“The whole school K-12 has now been dismissed for the year. All students and staff have been identified as close contacts. They must get tested and self-isolate according to NSW Health guidelines.”
