Darwin man fined $5k for not wearing mask

A 53-year-old Darwin man has been fined $5,056 fine for allegedly failing to wear a mask in public yesterday.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) say officers saw the man walking dogs along Larkin Avenue, Marrara while not wearing a mask.

“It is further alleged the man repeatedly refused to wear a mask when advised to do so by police, and refused to provide identification,” the AFP said in a statement.

“Subsequent enquiries by police identified the man as a 53-year-old from Wulagi.”

AFP officers attended the man’s home yesterday afternoon where he was issued with an infringement notice for failing to comply with the Northern Territory Chief Health Officer’s directive.

AFP Darwin Airport Police Commander, Superintendent Matt Ballard said it was a timely reminder for the public that health directives apply to airports and the surrounding area.

“The community in the Northern Territory by and large continue to do the right thing and comply with the Northern Territory’s Chief Health Officer’s directives,” said Superintendent Ballard.

“This instance is a reminder that health regulations apply across the community, and that includes airports.

“I would like to remind people to report non-compliance directly to police, especially if an immediate attendance by police is required.”
